An Garda Síochána have released a statement following the verdict from a medical inquest of Leitrim man. Liam Farrell died suddenly at his home in Aughamore on the 12th of January 2020, in what his family believe were violent circumstances. The jury in the inquest returned an open verdict, meaning that in their view the evidence did not fully or clearly explain the cause and circumstances of death.
Following the conclusion of the inquest, An Garda Síochána said they are aware of the verdict of the Coroner's inquest into the death of Liam Farrell. They said that Gardaí carried out a full investigation, into the discovery of the body of Mr Farrell on the evening of the 12th January 2020. The statement confirmed that a Garda investigation file was submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions and that no prosecution was directed. Gardaí also confirmed that subsequent information coming to the attention of the investigation team has also been provided to the office of the DPP, however that has not changed the current direction of no prosecution. The statement concluded by saying that An Garda Síochána continues to engage with family of Mr. Farrell and that they respect the confidentiality of meetings with families and does not disclose the contents of such meetings or discussions.
