The Department of Integration have confirmed plans to accommodate International Protection applicants at a former nursing home in Athlone. The former Stella Maris nursing home will be used to accommodate families and has a capacity for 60 people.
The nursing home closed in 2022 after operating for 35 years at Baylough, Athlone. In a statement to Shannonside FM News, the Department say the new accommodation centre will be ready for arrivals shortly.
