The funeral of former Leitrim councillor Des Guckian is taking place today. The Annaduff man died last week after a short illness, while aged in his 70s.
Des Guckian had a long career as a teacher in St Mel's College in Longford town before becoming a councillor in 2014. He served as an Independent on Leitrim County Council for 11 years, representing the Carrick-on-Shannon Local Electoral Area.
After first getting elected in 2014, he retained his seat in the local elections of 2019 and 2024. But he was forced to quit the council early last month, due to illness, and his daughter Irene took over.
He had a keen interest in history, publishing several books, and was a fluent Irish speaker. He died peacefully in Sligo Hospice on Thursday morning.
His funeral Mass will take place this morning in St. Mary’s Church, Annaduff, at 12 noon, followed by burial to the adjoining cemetery.
