Floating boardwalk could be developed near Yewpoint on Lough Ree

The acquisition of the protected lands on the shores of Lough Ree will see a major eco-tourism project developed there in the coming years

The Hodson Bay Hotel Group which has bought a peninsula of 145 acres near the site of the existing hotel says it hopes that it may be able to work with Roscommon Council in developing part of the area.

John O' Sullivan from the group says they intend to develop the site as a major eco-tourism destination and they hope to allow controlled access for people onto the protected lands later this month.

He says that Roscommon Council has commissioned a study with Waterways Ireland and Failte Ireland to see if it's possible to develop a public facility similar to the Acres Lake floating boardwalk in Leitrim alongside part of the peninsula.

Mr O' Sullivan says the group will be happy to work with the agencies to allow the facility to be developed for some form of public amenity as well.
