The installation of the new electricity interconnector through Ballaghaderreen will cause some traffic disruption over the coming years but every effort will be made to minimise it.
That's according to Eirgrid spokesperson David Martin who says some challenges have been identified with routing the underground cable through towns like Ballaghaderreen and Ballina.
Eirgrid announced in recent days that it had selected the underground option for the North Connacht 110 Kv project after studying four overhead and three underground routes over the past several months.
David Martin says the option they have chosen will run alongside the main road from Ballina to Ballaghaderreen and they hope to be able to begin work inside the next two years.
He says some disruption will be inevitable but the cable will also provide an important upgrade in infrastructure for the North West.
