A Bill being put forward on fossil gas infrastructure is being criticised.
Friends of the Irish Environment says accelerating LNG does not protect the country from geopolitical instability, price shocks or supply disruption.
County Leitrim led the way to ban fracking in 2017 and its felt any move to introduce fracked gas through LNG would be a step backwards for climate action in the county.
Shannon LNG was denied planning permission in 2023 on the basis of the ban.
However, last December, the Taoiseach confirmed that the Government is pressing ahead with plans to protect energy supplies.
This was seen as a blow to anti-fracking campaigners locally who had successfully lobbied to introducing a ban on fracking in the region.
