Roscommon County Council says it would cost up to €600,000 a year to run a designated county museum.
But it is backing the idea, after it was proposed earlier this week.
Independent councillor Tom Crosby is calling for a designated county museum to be developed in Roscommon.
He wants it based in Strokestown.
His proposal was backed by councillors at their meeting this week.
Roscommon County Council says it would be a 'very significant undertaking' to develop and run.
It says there are seven designated county museums in Ireland.
It says they're subsidised by their councils, at an average rate of €474,000 for 2026, within a range of €300,000 to €600,000.
The council says there doesn't appear to be a source of funding for either the capital cost or the operation of the museum.
But the council is backing the plan.
It says it will seek to identify and apply for funding to advance a feasibility study for the project.
