Concerns are being raised about the referral process from Mullingar Regional Hospital to hospitals in Dublin.
Local woman Fiona Coffey highlighted her 78-year-old father's experience when he was admitted to Mullingar Hospital for serious injury which resulted in a fractured jaw and severe facial and nerve damage.
She says many efforts were made by doctors and staff at Mullingar to refer her father to a hospital in Dublin for plastic surgery, but their requests were refused.
Fiona was advised to take her father to the A&E at St. James' Hospital in Dublin to be seen by a plastic surgeon, where they faced a long wait which spilled into the early hours of the following morning.
In response, the HSE Dublin and Midlands confirmed they are engaged with other HSE colleagues to reestablish normal service.
