The organiser of an anti-racism event planned for Longford this Saturday believes the death of George Floyd has deeply affected the African community in the county.

A 'Black Lives Matter' themed event is being held in Longford town centre on Saturday, with similar events planned for Carrick on Shannon and Ballinamore.

The Longford event will see people gather at the market square before marching in a socially distant fashion to the County Council Offices on Great Water Street.

Organiser Erik Ehigie is urging everyone who might be interested in taking part to bring their own PPE and be aware of the health of others.

He says the event has got full permission from the relevant authorities and claims that the death of George Floyd, which has sparked days of unrest in the USA, has been deeply felt by the African community here too.
