Roscommon based Senator Maura Hopkins has announced she will not be supporting the proposal to allow unrestricted abortion up to 12 weeks.
In a statement issued this afternoon she said she supported terminations in cases of rape, fatal foetal abnormalities and when a woman’s life or health is at risk.
But the Fine Gael senator said she could not support abortion without any restriction up to three months.
She added that she will be supporting the Government’s decision to hold a referendum on the 8th Amendment to allow the Irish people to have their say.
Statement from Senator Maura Hopkins on the 8th Amendment
I have read the Joint Oireachtas Committee Report on the Eighth Amendment and I have spoken with many people over the past number of months. Following much consideration, my personal view is that I will not be supporting the proposal to allow for unrestricted abortions up to 12 weeks.
I do support terminations in cases of rape, incest, fatal foetal abnormalities and when a woman’s life or health is at risk. However, I cannot support abortion without any restriction up to 3 months. I believe that it is important women receive the necessary care and support in these difficult circumstances. I also believe that we have a responsibility to protect the rights of the unborn child.
As a public representative, it is important that people would know my view. This is my personal view and I do not wish in any way to influence the views of others.
It is important that everyone should have their voice heard on this issue. As a young representative, I am very aware that many people have not had the opportunity to express their view on the 8th amendment. This is why I will be supporting the government’s decision to hold a referendum later this year on the matter in order to allow the Irish People to have their say.
