Westmeath setup a Bord Na Mona O’Byrne Cup semi-final with Longford courtesy of a six-point victory over Kildare at The Downs today.
Westmeath winning out 1-13 to 1-7 as Kildare finished with 14 men after Pascal Connell was dismissed just before half-time. Westmeath will host Longford in a home venue to be confirmed.
David Slattery’s 19th minute goal moved Kildare into a 1-5 to seven pints half-time lead but Joe Halligan found the net within a minute of the restart.
Westmeath made the most of their numerical advantage in the second-half as Ger Egan sent over six points including three free’s.
Westmeath will face Longford in the O’Byrne Cup semi-final on Saturday January 12th at 2pm in a Westmeath venue to be decided.
The other semi-final see’s defending champions Dublin face Meath at 7pm in Parnell Park the same evening.
