Buccaneers Club Notes March 3

Buccaneers RFC Club notes March third 2020.

Buccs v MU Barnhall rescheduled

MU Barnhall’s first senior competitive appearance proved a non-playing one at Dubarry Park when their Energia All-Ireland League Division 2A match was called off on Saturday last.

The pitch passed an early morning inspection and was then felt playable by referee Stuart Douglas on his arrival.

However, heavy sleety rain and a bitter swirling breeze in the interim saw conditions deteriorate before the referee, in conjunction with officials from both teams, made the prudent decision to postpone the match.

It may have been late after both teams had completed their warm-ups, but it was the wisest and safest option.

With Ireland’s Guinness Six Nations fixture against Italy already deferred, at time of writing it seems likely that the Buccaneers and MU Barnhall game will be rescheduled for this Saturday with the match sponsored by the Hodson Bay Group.

MU Barnhall have enjoyed a couple of superb seasons including a very lengthy winning sequence that was halted only recently at Rainey Old Boys.

They returned to winning ways at UL Bohemian after that but then came a cropper at home when Queen’s University came out on top by 49-31.

Two defeats in the past three matches is unusual for MU Barnhall and they will be more than eager to resume their drive for promotion which looked a foregone conclusion just last month.

With both Queen’s and Cashel winning last weekend, MU Barnhall’s lead has now been trimmed to just a solitary point.

They proved too strong and smart for Buccs at Parsonstown but the midlanders will be boosted by a return to sparkling form against UL Bohs.

There the Pirates put in an impressive all-round performance that, if repeated on Saturday, will ask serious questions of the division’s pacesetters.

Martin Staunton is out through injury but, hopefully, young due Saul O’Carroll and Shane Jennings will have recovered from injury and illness respectively to renew their promising partnership in the centre.

Sean Masterson and Conor Kenny are in South Africa with Connacht while Declan Adamson and Ryan O’Meara are injury doubts. However, Darragh Murray and Rory O’Connor may be involved.

If the Athlone side can repeat the intensity, precision and focus shown at UL, then Buccaneers can spring a surprise it what will surely be a battle of wills to regain momentum. Kick-off is likely to be 2:30pm.

U-20’s travel to Old Belvedere

Buccs U-20’s will be keen to get back to winning ways in the JP Fanagan Leinster League Premier 2 Division when they travel to Ollie Campbell Park to take on Old Belvedere on Sunday.

Buccs fixture away to Dublin University was another victim to the horrid weather. They came out on top 63-0 when the sides met in Athlone but it is likely to be a lot closer on this occasion although Old Belvo languish second from bottom with just a single win, in their opening fixture, to date. Kick-off is 3pm.

J1’s away to Connemara

Buccaneers J1’s face a daunting challenge when they venture west to Clifden to square up to Connemara in their penultimate Connacht Junior 1A League fixture at the Monastery Field on Sunday.

The hosts are clear leaders of the league and are certain to retain their title while the Blacks will also wish to record a 100% winning campaign so Buccs, in dire need of points, are unlikely to be granted any favours.

The Pirates are locked at the bottom of the table with Sligo, who have a better scoring difference.

The midlanders must simply do better than the north-westerners in their remaining two fixtures. It is a stiff challenge but one that with the right attitude and personnel can be accomplished.

Prosecco By the Pitch

Even though Buccaneers home game against MU Barnhall was called off, the club’s second ‘Prosecco by the Pitch’ event proved hugely enjoyable and very successful.

It’s possible that many attending this Ladies Day occasion may not even have been aware that a game was to take place! Nevertheless, those in attendance appeared to thoroughly enjoy their afternoon, although whether or not any of them availed of it being Leap Year Day!

There was a lengthy list of fine raffle prizes and the club gratefully acknowledges the relevant sponsors especially Nicola Fogarty of Athlone Fascinators, Syra Reid @ Fernhill Flowers, Liam Boland of Myst Hairdressing  and Henshaw Eyewear. Congratulations to Judy Dowling who won the ‘Best Dressed Lady’ award!

Thanks also to the primary drivers of ‘Prosecco by the Pitch’ including Lorna Stuart-Trainor, Aileen Hayes, Sandra Dowling, Giovanni Hudson, Nicola Fogarty, Mele Kiripati, Geraldine Kenny, Yvonne O’Shea, Susan Earner and the brave Diarmuid Sloane.

Thanks too to all the staff at The Bounty, Oliver Carty Meats, Grainne Cornally of Hodson Bay Group, and particularly to Dave Connolly and Frank McKiernan’s U-16’s team who performed admirably as waiters at the event.

Fashion Show

You are invited to “Have a Ball” at Buccaneers RFC’s GALA FASHION SHOW which takes place in Athlone’s Radisson Blu Hotel on Thursday, April 2nd.

Mandy Maher will be the host at the event and her Catwalk Model Agency is providing the models as well as sound and lighting so it should be a top class occasion with maybe a Buccaneers player or two tempted on to the catwalk too!

There will be a drinks and tapas reception on arrival supported by sponsorship from Croughan’s Supervalu and the show is scheduled to start at 7:30pm.

There will be a prize for the best-dressed lady, sponsored by Athlone Fascinators. Fashions from most of Athlone’s top fashion stores including Carraig Donn, Burgess, Olivia Danielle, Athlone Towncentre and Eddie Murphy will feature.

It has been quite a number of years since the club last staged a Fashion Show and this looks like an event not to be missed.

Tickets are available now from Carraig Donn (Golden Island), The Bounty and the Radisson Blu hotel.
