The sixth edition of the Athlone IT International Athletics Grand Prix takes place today.
Proceedings get underway at 6pm. The schedule will include women’s 60m, 400m and 1500m and High Jump.
The mens events will be the 60m,60m hurdles, 400m, 800m, Pole Vault and Long Jump.
There is a mix of Irish and International competitors.
Ciara Magean will take her place in the 1500m. The Down Athlete spoke to Kevin Egan at the launch of the Grand Prix yesterday.
So far this year, Magean broke the Irish Mile record in Boston and had a good race in Madrid.
“my big goal is to get ready for the European championship and anything that helps me in the process of that is fantastic”.
The Portaferry competitor was full of praise for the venue “it’s nice to be able to come here and have a good meet and it’s testament to the organisers. it’s a nice compact stadium and it’s a fantastic atmosphere”
Magean concluded “i’m looking forward to the year ahead and the few years ahead. big picture is Tokyo in 2020 so everything’s gearing towards that.”
