Fiona Tully and Galway rival Ciana Ni Curraoin won the US Open championships Ladies Open Doubles title in a classic battle with Cork’s Catriona Casey and America’s Tracy Davis.
Played in the famous Los Cabolleros complex in Santa Barbara, California, the Roscommon/Galway combination took a while to get into the match as the brilliant Casey stamped her authority on the match.
The Cork girl dominated proceedings and ably assisted by Davis they took the first 21-13.
The second was a thriller as the all four players showed touches of class and the lead changed hands many times before Fiona and Ciana took it 21-17.
At this stage it was a hard game to call and
All bets were off as the tit-for-tat nature of the contest continued right up to the very last point with a tie-breaker only to 11 anything can happen.
The Connacht combination took the tie-breaker 11-10 for a sensational win.
Tully reached the singles semi-final, but was comprehensively beaten by Ciana, who then lost the final to Casey.
