Roscommon scored their first victory of their Allianz League Division 2 campaign with a comfortable seven-point victory against Clare 1-8 to four points.
Clare failed to convert a score for 45 minutes as Storm Ciara blew down hard on Dr. Hyde Park with Roscommon played with the winds for the opening half.
Anthony Cunningham’s led by six-point at the interval, the Connacht champions were far more assured after the break.
Cathal Cregg and Cian McKeon had Roscommon on the scoreboard by the 10th minute but Roscommon were reduced to 14 men on 23 minutes when Niall Daly received two yellow cards in quick succession.
Ciarán Lennon, McKeon (free) and Cregg all sent over points as Roscommon led six points to nil at half-time.
Roscommon were excellent in the second-half, substitute Eddie Nolan, helped Smith gain a foothold around the middle, and suddenly Roscommon were in charge of the possession stakes.
A foul on Lennon resulted in McKeon’s third free of the afternoon after 39 minutes, the first point of the afternoon into the “scoreboard end” of the Hyde.
David Tubridy finally opened Clare’s account from a long-range free but they still struggled to gain any foothold in the contest.
Their remaining three points came in second-half injury time through Tubridy and Eoin Cleary from frees, and a fisted effort from substitute Jack Morrissey.
Enda Smith pointed on the run with three minutes remaining before Gately bundled the ball into the empty net, after Lennon had been denied, to confirm his side’s victory.
