Roscommon overcome Sligo to set-up Leitrim semi-final

Roscommon began their defence of the FBD League with an impressive 1-15 to 14 point win over Sligo writes Michael Cooke.

The Rossies set the tone for the win early-on, Andrew Glennon had two points on the board after 11 minutes with Sligo yet to register.

The sides were level at three points apiece after 20 minutes with Paddy O’Connor very much to the fore for Sligo.

Subsequently Roscommon hit a purple patch where they hit five points without reply, including a brace each from Shane Killoran and Henry Walsh and one from Conor McKeown.

Andrew Glennon was black-carded during this period but that didn’t detract from Roscommon’s performance.

Finbarr Cregg and Liam Guaghan traded points as the first-half drew to a close as Roscommon led by nine points to four at half-time.

Sligo made a bright start to the second half as they cut the deficit to two points. Their resurgence was short-lived though as Cian McKeon scored the only goal of the game after 58 minutes.

The last quarter was evenly contested but points from Cian McKeon, Conor Lennon and substitute Conor Cox were enough to keep Roscommon ahead.

Roscommon will now play Leitrim after winning on a final score of 1-15 to 14 points.
