Roscommon Move Top After Westmeath Win

Roscommon moved to summit of Allianz League division one with a stunning 1-16 to 12 point win over Westmeath in Dr. Hyde Park.

Conor Cox and Enda Smith scored 0-9 between them as the Rossies secured the Athlone derby and saw Anthony Cunningham’s side leap-frog Cavan at the top of Division two with seven points.

Roscommon took full advantage of the first-half wind taking a six point lead into the break, 1-9 to 0-3 and the result was never in doubt as Westmeath side failed to fight back.

Westmeath were level just once after John Heslin cancelled out Cian McKeon’s opening score for Anthony Cunningham’s men.

Conor Cox added two points before Conor Daly fisted home the game’s only goal in the 20th minute from Enda Smith’s pass.

Donie Smith and Ronan O’Toole traded points before the Rossies lost Conor Hussey to a black card.

But Roscommon dominated the remainder of the half with points from Cathal Cregg, Enda Smith (3f) and Cox saw them nine points clear.

Enda Smith missed a second-half penalty after the restart, sending the rebound over the bar.

It mattered little as Niall Kilroy, substitute Ciarán Lennon and Donie Smith two free’s and a mark from Conor Cox sealed the Roscommon win.
