60×30 Open Doubles
St.Coman’s Damien Martin and Rikki O’Gara are out of the 60×30 Open Doubles after losing to experienced Wexford pair Tommy Hynes and Barry Goff last Saturday.
The match was held in the rarely used venue of Na Fianna in Dublin and it took the Roscommon lads some time to get used to the court.
They were also in the unusual situation of facing two left-handers, something almost unheard of in doubles handball and even for experienced players a little tricky to face.
The Wexford lads, both of whom are former winners of this event, were much the better pair in the first game and Hynes in particular was rolling the ball out in spectacular style as they romped to a comfortable 21-12 win.
The Roscommon pair showed much more urgency in the second and having gone 3-8 down got back to 8-8, but they then went 14-8 down.
However, playing some fine handball they brought the game back to level pegging again at 14 each, but that was as good as it got as the ferociously hard-hitting Hynes finished the game off with more top-class killing to give the South East men a deserved 21-12, 21-14 victory.
60×30 Junior ‘C’ Doubles
St. Coman’s Sean Rafferty and Brian Mannion had a good win in the 60×30 Junior ‘C’ Doubles Connacht final held in Collooney, Co. Sligo last Sunday.
Due to a re-fixture request the Sligo opposition of Clive Slevin and Josian Oskoz were playing in their home court and they made it count in the first which they won 21-13.
The Roscommon lads upped the ante in the second and took it 21-14. The third was very tight the whole way, but the Roscommon lads were that little bit fitter and won narrowly 21-19.
