Roscommon CBS are busy preparing for the Top Oil Connacht Senior Cup final against Garbally College.
Roscommon CBS grabbed a place in the decider after a 16-8 victory over Colaiste Iognaid in Cregg’s rugby club on Thursday.
Mark Purcell scored one try, one conversion and three penalties to secure the win.
Roscommon CBS coach Eimhin Griffin spoke with Dave Hooper on Saturday Sport about the tremendous achievement.
Grffin outlined “I was quietly confident we would get this far. I know our league form wouldn’t have suggested it but I knew there was a really good group and I knew if they committed they could do it”.
The school celebrated the historic win the following day. Griffin added “The atmosphere was electric on Thursday and Friday. It lifts the boys and the entire school. The younger school lads will look up to it and give them something to aspire to”.
Looking forward to the final, Griffin said “Garbally are the kingpins of Connacht. They are an excellent side they are well drilled and we will be going into the game as underdogs but we are looking forward to it”.
Griffin is hopeful the school can build on the success “three years ago they won the Junior cup. They probably had a bit of hard luck with that side that we didn’t have the senior breakthrough before this. They probably had the belief”.
Historically, it’s a football school and Griffin says “there’s been a massive stride made for rugby in the school with this success”.
The Final takes place on March 13th at 4pm in the Sportsgrounds in Galway.
