Goals prove crucial as Roscommon defeat Kildare

Roscommon moved into third place in Allianz League Division two with an impressive 2-11 to 13 points win over Kildare at Newbridge.

The Lilywhites led by seven points to five at the interval as second-half goals from Cathal Cregg and an Enda Smyth penalty proved decisive.

Roscommon made an explosive start to the game registering four points in the opening five minutes as Cian McKeon, Niall Daly, Cathal Cregg and Donie Smith registered a point each.

Jack O’Connor’s side responded in style with four successive scores and the teams were level after 18 minutes.

Donie Smith then got his second point of the day leaving the Rossies trailing by two points at half-time.

17 minutes after the restart, Roscommon took the lead when Cathal Cregg scored the opening goal of the game giving the visitors a one-point lead.

Cian McKeon was closing in on a second goal for Roscommon only to be dragged down in the Kildare goalmouth and a penalty was awarded in the 65th minute.

Up stepped Enda Smyth who buried it in style putting four points between the teams.

Brian Stack and Kildare’s Daniel Flynn subsequently traded a point each as Roscommon won by three points in the end.

The win marks an important result for Anthony Cunningham’s men who were boosted by the return of key players like Conor Cox and Cathal Compton.
