Comerford Is New Roscommon Hurling Manager

Ciaran Comerford was last night confirmed as the new Roscommon senior hurling manager.

Comeford’s backroom team will include Johnny Keane of Portumna as a trainer/coach and Gary Murphy as strength and conditioning coach.

The reminder of Comerford backroom members will be announced in the coming days.


Comerford brings a wealth of experience with him from his playing days in Laois and with Portumna and also coached in Laois and Galway, having being Roscommon coach in 2017.

Ciaran Comerford Manager/Hurling Coach

Ciaran originally hails from a small GAA community called Kilcotton which is just outside Borris-in-Ossory in Co. Laois.

Ciaran represented his home club in Laois at senior level for 16 years and in 2015 due to work and family commitments transferred to Portumna where he has since represented Portumna at both Junior and Senior hurling grades.

Ciaran has 13 years’ experience in managing and coaching at all grades from U14 to Senior in both hurling and camogie.

Enjoying huge underage success with his home club Borris/Kilcotton, 3xU16 and 3xU21 titles.

Ciaran coached the Laois U21 hurlers in 2015 under Cheddar Plunkett and coached the Roscommon Senior Hurlers the season just gone under Johnny Kelly.

Johnny Keane Selector/Hurling Coach/Tactical Coach

Johnny is a Portumna native and was an integral panel member of all 4 of Portumna’s Club All Ireland victories.

Johnny is currently coaching the Portumna senior hurling team after being involved in 2015 also.

Johnny also has had the Mullagh senior camogie team for the last 3 years and contested this years county final with Sarsfields. Managed and coached Portumna camogie to Intermediate, Junior A,

Johnny Coached the Galway intermediate camogie team 2016 and Coached Kiltormer hurling team in 2016 and 2017.

Gary Murphy S & C Coach

Gary is a qualified Strength and Conditioning Coach with a keen eye for nutrition and player wellbeing.

Gary has played inter county football with Longford and League of Ireland soccer with Longford Town where he has won two FAI Cups and a League Cup.

Up until recently Gary was a player/S&C coach with Newbridge Town. Gary also has experience as an S & C coach with hurling and camogie teams in Galway.
