Castlerea’s Aoife O’Rourke stunned Russian Olympic Youth and World Youth champion Anastasia Shamonova to guarantee silver at the European Elites championships in Madrid.
The middleweight won on a 4-1 split decision to setup a gold medal bout with Poland’s Elziebta Wojcik on Saturday night.
O’Rourke consistently clipped Shamonova with overhand rights in the opening round and refused to back off against the aggressive orthodox boxer in the opening two rounds.
O’Rourke worked the jab in the third round to secure the victory, 28-29, 29-28, 29-28, 30-27, 29-28 with just the Italian judge giving Shamonova the nod.
The evening session of final bouts begins at 5pm Irish time, with O’Rourke’s bout with Wojcik, eighth on the bill.
