Aoife O’Rourke scored a unanimous decision to win the European Elite Middleweight championship in Madrid with a devastating display.
The 21-year-old Castlerea boxer joins Katie Taylor as the only Irish women to land the European title with her victory over Poland’s Elzebieta Wojcik.
The Roscommon won was excellent throughout impressing the judges with a front foot display landing a solid opening left to the body, which rocked the Pole.
O’Rourke built on her early first round, working consecutive left shots including a clever uppercut as she continued to dominate.
Wojcik found herself on the ropes midway through the second, with O’Roruke’s uppercuts unable to break through the Pole’s defence but the sustained pressure paying off.
The Roscommon woman produced a final round well beyond her age, showing experience to control the fight and secure her European gold medal.
Putting the gloss on the victory in the final 30 seconds with a fast combo as the five judges all agreed on Aoife O’Rourke’s gold medal.
O’Rourke and the Irish squad are due to arrive home via Dublin Airport this Sunday morning at 10.40am. (Flight 1B3792; Departure Madrid: 09.10. Arrival Dublin: 10.40 (Terminal 1).
