Second half goals seal Longford victory

Offaly 1-13

Longford 3-18

Second half goals from Sean McCormack, Rian Brady and Conor Brady saw Longford get their Allianz national football league division three campaign off to a winning start.

Longford started brightly taking a four point lead in via Rian Brady, Robbie Smyth, Barry Gilleran and Sean McCormack before Offaly struck a ninth minute goal from Cian Donohue.

Longford however stood firm openly conceding one point in the first half as Paddy Collumn, Sean McCormack and two each Rian Brady (1f) and Robbie Smyth (1f)  sent the ball over the bar and Longford to lead 0-14 to 1-1 at the break.

Longford found the net three times in the second half in a three minute spell thanks to Sean McCormack, Rian and Conor Brady to seal the victory.

While Offaly sent over 12 second half points, it purely put respectability on the score-line, Longford having led 3-15 to 1-2.

“2018 starts today” explained Longford boss Denis Connerton. “We’ve teams playing at their own level against the own teams.”

“The big thing in leagues is to try and get as many points as possible as early as you can” explained Connerton.

“We’ve always been expected to be in the relegation zone, but we’re still here, so let’s see how this season goes” added Connerton.
