McPhilips Wins Antrim International Cross Country

Cian McPhilips landed the under 17 title at the Antrim international cross country on Saturday.

McPhilips ran 19 minutes 46 seconds for the 5,400 metre course to finish eighth overall as the race was combined with the under 20 men’s race.

Longford man McPhilips was just 40 seconds behind Ireland under 20 athlete Jamie Beattie. McPhilips was 13 second ahead of second placed Paul Hartnett.


McPhilips combined with Tommy Connolly 19th and Sean Donoghue 23rd to give Ireland team victory with 50 points, 23 points clear of second placed Wales.

Ireland development team finished in third place with 82 points.

Margaret Chelimo Kipkemboi of Kenya won out in 19 minutes 55 seconds. Fionnuala McCormack finished in sixth place just 35 second off Chelimo.

The senior men’s race was won outright by Timothy Cheruiyot of Kenya with Ethopian Mogos Tuemay second and Morocco was third in Soufiane Elbakkali.
