A second half brace from Aaron Dobbs saw Longford Town book their place in the second round of the Extra.ie FAI Cup over Athlone Town writes Deniese O’Flaherty.
Athlone had the better of the chances in the opening half, Longford keeper Lee Steacy tipped over Kealan Dillon’s sixth minute effort.
Moments later Nika Kalandarshvili headed wide, while Jamie Hamilton’s 17th minute shot was just over. Athlone hit the front five minutes before the break
Hamilton’s through ball was flicked on by Kalandarshvii for Kealan Dillon to fire home from inside the box.
Longford were a different proposition in the second half, just 38 seconds had elapsed when Aaron Dobbs equalised finishing off Dylan Grimes’ cross.
On 61 minutes Carlton Ubaezuonu’s shot was tipped over the bar by Athlone keeper Aaron Myles.
Longford took the lead on 72 minutes after a five minute stoppage as a corner flag was replaced as Joe Manley with a tap-in from a corner.
Aaron Dobbs sealed victory for Longford in the third minute of stoppage time as he rounded Athlone keeper Myles and finished from a tight angle as Longford progress to meet Bohemians in round two.
