Longford secured the Allianz League division 3B title with a 2-15 to 3-10 win over Sligo after extra-time in Ballyhaunis.
The sides couldn’t be separated in normal time as Sligo found two goals late in the second half to tie the game at 3-7 to 1-13.
Longford found the first three scores of extra-time with a goal and two points to pull five points clear, a distance Sligo were unable to crawl back.
“It was heart stopping stuff from start to finish, it was just the game ebbed and flowed all the time, the weather conditions made is so hard” explained Longford boss Derek Frehill.
“The quality may not have been there at times, but the effort couldn’t be faulted by both sets of players. But we are delighted to come out on top.”
“In the first 70 minutes, the Sligo goals were killing us” admitted Frehill. “Every time we were getting a bit of momentum and seemed to be getting a handle on the game we conceded a goal.”
“That was putting us under pressure, but the extra-time was great and really showed us the panel that we had.
“There effort was immense today and I think we fully deserved the win” declared Frehill.
