A last gasp free from Darren Gallagher saw a one point Longford O’Byrne Cup semi-final victory ovewr Dublin writes Michael Cooke.
Longford sealing victory in a thrilling 1-13 to 3-6 over Dessie Farrell’s Dublin at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park.
Longford started and finished the game in style, opening a three-point lead in the 17th minute. Their lead was relinquished a minute later however when Killian O’Gara rattled the net.
The sides traded two points each thereafter and the half-time the score was 1-3 to six points with all of the scores coming from play.
The first 15 minutes of the second half were absolutely riveting as with three goals scored.
10 minutes into the second half, Kevin Diffley found the net for Longford while Niall O’Callaghan scored a brace for Dessie Farrell’s side. His second pushing Dublin into a two-point lead.
Dublin held onto their two point cushion until the 66th minute but were held scoreless for the remainder of the contest.
Longford’s onslaught started when Darren Gallagher slotted over a free and Darragh Doherty scored the equaliser.
The game ended in the most dramatic fashion when Longford were awarded a free in the final minute.
Darren Gallagher’s accurate effort sealed victory as it finished Longford 1-13 Dublin 3-6.
Longford will now play Offaly in next weekend’s final after the faithful county beat Westmeath 16 points to 11 in their semi-final.
