A late James Guinness goal gave Down two point victory over an impressive Longford in Pairc Esler on a 2-13 to 1-14 scoreline.
Longford came close to taking the points in Newry with the sides sharing three goals in the second-half, Liam Connerton’s goal on 51 minutes.
Down struck back with two from goals Corey Quinn and James Guinness as they went onto claim victory.
Just seconds were on the clock when this one sprung to life, Oran Kenny opening the scoring for Longford, Down responding with points from Darren O’Hagan and Barry O’Hagan.
Liam Connerton equalised on five minutes with Corey Quinn responding for Down and Peter Lynn restoring parity on 14 minutes. Johnny Flynn restored Down’s lead two minutes later.
Darren Gallagher levelled the scores on 18 minutes before Down moved two points clear 0-6 to 0-4 on 24 minutes.
Frees from Darren Gallagher free and Paddy Collum brought Longford level before Kevin McKernan restored a one point lead for Down three minutes before the break.
Another Darren Gallagher free made it seven points each with Down going two points clear at the break 0-9 to 0-7 that’s to Liam Kerr and Barry O’Hagan.
Down moved four points clear by the 14th minute of the second-half via Donal O’Hare and Corey Quinn.
Liam Connerton got Longford back into it on 51 minutes as he fisted Darren Gallagher’s cross ball to the net.
Dessie Reynolds levelled the game a minute later with Darren Gallagher pushing Longford ahead 1-9 to 11 points and then added another point via a free on 56 minutes.
Down added two points to level the game with 10 minutes remaining before going ahead thanks to a Corey Quinn goal with eight minutes remaining.
Longford weren’t done frees from Daniel Mimnagh and Darren Gallagher levelling the game but Down struck a killer goal via James Guinness with three minutes remaining.
Daniel Mimnagh pulled one back but time ran out as Longford lost out by two points, 2-13 to 1-14.
