Leitrim succumbed to a powerful Mayo second half performance as they won the opening Connacht minor championship game of 2019 by 17 points.
Barry McWeeney sent over Leitrim’s second point of the game as they trailed Mayo by two on 15 minutes, McWeeney added a free two minutes later to cut the gap to one.
Mayo responded with points from Paddy Heneghan and Emmet Murphy to restore a three point lead before McWeeney sent over a point to make it six points to four on 22 minutes.
Points for Mayo from Mark Tighe and Rory Morrin saw Mayo lead at the break by eight points to four.
Frank Irwin pushed Mayo five points after two second half minutes with Fergal McLoughlin responding two minutes later, but that was it for Leitrim scores
Two Frank Irwin free’s and points from play for Paddy Heneghan, Ronan Hughes, Owen McHale and Ray Walsh saw Mayo push their lead out to 10 points, 0-5 to 0-15.
12 minutes from time Conor Mylett tagged on Mayo points with Barry McWeeney’s free on 55 minutes, Leitrim’s first score in 21 minutes.
Mayo put some icing on the score-line with Frank Irwin finding the net two minutes from time and adding two furthers points and Cian O’Connell sealed the 1-20 to 0-6 win.
