The Leitrim senior football team will take on Wexford on Sunday in their second outing in this year’s Division four, Allianz Football league campaign. Sunday’s match will see the respective sides put unbeaten records on the line as the home team, and the men from the model county look to build on positive results secured against Wicklow and Limerick in the opening round.
For their part Leitrim will be looking to park their opening day win over Wicklow, granted the management team led by Benny Guickan will be delighted to have secured two precious league points, but equally so they now have to everybody’s feet firmly on the ground for Sunday’s encounter.
Wexford defeated Leitrim by just a single piont in the corresponding fixture last year, and although Benny Guickan was not in charge of the Connacht side back then he is well aware of the strong physical challenge that the Leinster side will pose to his charges on Sunday afternoon. The Wexford game plan of trying to penetrate teams down through the middle of their defence is one aspect of the Wexford game that the Leitrim manager is urging his side to be weary of.
The Leitrim manger has confirmed that his squad have responded well to the events of last week and with the extra confidence of having league points in their account they embraced training during the week. It was a young and somewhat inexperienced team that represented the County last week in Aughrim but one of the most pleasing aspects for the management team was their discipline which remained very much in tact even when the home side became more physical in the second half.
Leitrim will once again be without Wayne McKeon for Sunday after he damaged his ankle in a work related accident prior to the Wicklow game. Apart from the Ballinamore man, they will have more or less the same panel to choose from again on Sunday.
Team selection will not be simple for Benny Guickan and his backroom team. A number of the substitutes used last week will feel they have a strong cause for selection this week. Damien Moran will be one strong contender for a starting place after scoring three points last week following on from his introduction from the bench.
Finally Guickan has urged the Leitrim supporters to get out and get behind the team on Sunday as they take on one of the big promotion contenders in Wexford. Once again he expressed his regret at the nature of the FBD league encounter against Galway, however he has urged the support to back his young team that are fully focused on trying to change the fortunes of Leitrim football.
