Leitrim came close to a dramatic opening day success as they drew 2-11 to 1-14 with Derry in Celtic Park.
Leitrim showed no fear as they returned to Allianz League division three and were inspired by the returning Keith Beirne who registered eight points including four free’s and a 45.
Ciaran McFaul gave Derry the lead on seven minutes, within four minutes Leitrim led by two thanks to two Beirne fees and Shane Moran point.
Cillian McGloin found the net for Leitrim on 13 minutes to move Leitrim into a 1-3 to one point lead.
Derry responded with three points from Emmett Bradley (1f) and one from Ryan Bel
Shane Moran moved Leitrim two ahead on 20 minutes with Ryan Bell’s 45 returning the lead to one point. Darragh Rooney and a Keith Beirne free made it 1-7 to six points on 28 minutes.
Derry cut the gap with an Emmett Bradley goal three minutes from the break and points from Eoghan Duffy and Chrissy McKaigue moved them a point clear at half-time.
Leitrim responded excellently after the break Domhnail Flynn and three Keith Beirne points including a 45 and a free saw them lead 1-11 to 1-8.
Derry struck back with a Shane McGuigan goal on 46 points but a Keith Beirne point two minutes later and another Shane McGowan score made it 1-13 to 2-8.
Emmet Bradley and Keith Beirne exchanged scores but it was Derry who came back to claim a draw with a Ben McCarron point and Ciaran McFaul’s point on the 70th minute sealing a 2-11 to 1-14 draw.
Leitrim host Cork in round two of the Allianz League, Cork registered a seven point win over Offaly 20 points to 13 in Pairc Ui Chaoimh.
