The 2017 Inter-County football season wasted little time in getting under way with a full round of matches in the Hastings Cup (under 21 football competition) on Bank Holiday Monday.
It’s a competition that Cavan have enjoyed success in over recent times and they Breffni Blues continued this after defeating Roscommon in their opening round encounter which was played in Gowna. Cavan were runners-up last year and laid down an earlier maker for this year’s competition when they registered a 3-15 to 0-14 victory over Roscommon.

Elsewhere in today’s opening round there were victories for Leitrim and the defending champions Offaly.
Benny Guickan is managing both the senior and under teams in 2017 and he enjoyed a happy start to the new year in Cloone, where he watched his charges dispatch of the challenged which was presented by the Garden county. The Home side scored three and ran out comfortable 3-14 to 1-10.
Elsewhere, in Tubber, Offaly overcame Meath on a 2-7 to 0-11 scoreline with goals either side of the break from Ciaran Farrell and Shane Tierney.
The firstround action continues tomorrow evening (Tuesday) in Tubberclair where Westmeath take on Longford in a local derby which will commence at 7.30.
