Joe Ward has committed himself to boxing at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The three-time European champion has rebuffed interest from the professional ranks to take part in a second Olympics.
The Moate boxer is Ireland’s most successful ever boxer at the European Championships. The Westmeath man won his third gold medal at the Championships by beating his Russian opponent in the final of the light heavyweight division last month. The 23 year old claimed the win on a unanimous decision, to follow up his wins in 2011 and 2015 with another title. Since the win he’s been mulling over whether to turn professional or to stay amateur.
Ward has also been confirmed as the Ireland team captain for next month’s World Championships in Hamburg.
