Planning was granted recently but it will be the new year before a final decision is made.

Permission for a drive-thru coffee shop at the Golden Island Shopping Centre in Athlone has been appealed to An Bord Pleanála.

Int Inv GP Ltd was granted permission for the development in the North West Carpark of the shopping centre by Westmeath County Council recently.

The development would see a single storey pavilion drive thru coffee shop, with provision for the sale and consumption of beverages and food both on and off the premises.

Included in the plans are ancillary site works, reconfiguration and relocation of the existing car park and a new vehicle circulation route.

The plans have been the subject of submissions from neighbouring landowners who cite the removal and reconfiguration of the car parking spaces as a detriment to local businesses.

An appeal has now been lodged to Westmeath County Council with the higher planning authority due to make their decision on the matter in February of next year.
