Government agrees to tribunal over smear campaign against whistleblower

Enda-Kenny2-300x205The Taoiseach says a Tribunal will have to find out the truth as to whether there was a smear campaign against garda whistleblower Sergeant Maurice McCabe.

But Enda Kenny had to admit to the Dáil that he was guilty of giving an explanation about a phone call with the children’s minister – that never happened.

The Fianna Fáil leader began Dáil business after crisis meetings and the Cabinet decision.

And Enda Kenny told Micheál Martin the entire country sympathised with Maurice McCabe and a tribunal was being set up to get to the truth.

But the Taoiseach had to make an embarrassing climbdown about his account on radio last weekend of a conversation he said he had with the children’s minister – it never happened.

The government wants agreement on the terms of reference for the tribunal with opposition and passed by Dáil and Seanad in 48 hours.

But another whilstleblower Garda Keith Harrison has issued a statement through his solicitor demanding his inclusion in the Tribunal, claiming he was also the subject of a malicious referral to Tusla.
