A local tidy towns group is urging the public to think of the volunteers before littering public spaces.

The call comes following IBAL's new survey which was published today.

Longford is the only town in the Shannonside region to be rated among the top ten cleanest in the country.

Roscommon was described as moderately littered in 24th position.

Chairperson of Longford Tidy Towns John Farrell says they are hoping to stay in the top tier and improve if possible.

He says the culture of throwing cigarette butts on footpaths continues to be the most challenging.
