The closing down of the crime office in Granard has raised concerns for the future of the station.

Longford TD Joe Flaherty is calling for assurances on the future of Granard Garda station.

He says serious concerns for the future of the station have come to the fore again as a result of plans involved for the new operating model for the operation of An Garda Siochana.

Under the new model Garda Districts have been changed with Roscommon, Longford, and Mayo being joined together, and Superintendents taking on new specific roles.

The Fianna Fail TD says Garda members are already being moved out of Granard, and he's seriously concerned about the future of the station.

"We're being told that the crime office which is plain clothes officers in Granard is to be closed down and the three officers assigned to that unit are to be reassigned to other areas around the county. The fear is that this is the first step in a gradual phasing-down of the station and this, in-time, will regrettably lead to reduced opening hours in the station. We need an absolute commitment from Garda Authorities and the Minister for Justice that there are no plans to scale down operations at Granard Garda station".
