Wineport Lodge gets go ahead for significant expansion

An Bord Pleanála has granted planning permission for a significant expansion of a hotel near Athlone.

The planning appeals board dismissed concerns about the impact it could have on the environment.

Westmeath County Council had given Ray Byrne and Jane English the go-ahead for the works at the Wineport Lodge at Glasson.

It’d include three new guest rooms and a function room, with a bar and roof terrace.

But Glasson residents Tommy and Catherine Fallon appealed against it to the planning appeals board.

They claimed further development on the site would have a negative impact on the protected area and on wildlife.

But An Bord Pleanála’s inspector said there was no real likelihood of significant effects on the environment.

And the board itself granted permission, subject to eight revised conditions.
