Westmeath County Council predicts 3cm rise in River Shannon in coming days

Westmeath County Council is predicting the level of the River Shannon to rise by just over an inch in the coming days.

In a statement following reports of a rise of almost a foot in water levels at certain points in Athlone in recent days, the local authority claims that the level of the river will rise by 3cm as more heavy rain is predicted.

However, the council claims that this rise will not make a significant difference in the town or wider area.

It’s understood that the Clonown Road and Mc Quaid’s bridge are currently closed and that localised wastewater issues have occurred in both urban and rural areas of Athlone ,but, the Council states that no homes have suffered any flooding issues yet and they are continuing to monitor the situation.
