A Westmeath Fine Gael councillor says he wants to see an urgent review of the gender quota legislation.
Councillor Tom Farrell was speaking after he had been nominated to contest the Longford Westmeath convention in Mullingar last night.
Councillor Farrell withdrew his name from the contest last night meaning that a vote didn’t have to take place but he said he wanted a clear message sent to the Taoiseach about the impact of gender quotas in areas like Longford Westmeath.
A gender directive issued at last night’s event ordered that three candidates be chosen including one female.
Councillor Farrell says it’s the second time it’s been imposed in the constituency and will result in more people not being given the chance to contest in the future…
