Westmeath County Council director of services Barry Kehoe says he’s optimistic that real progress can be made on the longrunning ‘railway field’ issue in Athlone early next year.
The transport director says the council is presently drawing more detailed proposals on buying the field from CIE and he’s hopeful they will be positively received by the body.
The council wants to build a relief road across the land, running from St Vincent’s hospital to the Crescent.
Plans for the road were first talked about over ten years ago, but CIE’s reluctance to let go of the land has meant no progress could be made.
Barry Kehoe says the most recent meetings on the issue have been more productive.
