Water levels stabilise in Athlone

Water levels in Athlone appear to have stabilised in the last number of days, according to information obtained by Westmeath County Council.

Fears had grown the last week that due to more inclement weather, the water level of the River Shannon had grown dangerously high.

The Minister for the OPW Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran also confirmed that huge volumes of water are still being dispersed through the Parteen weir at Ardnacrusha following heavy rainfall in the Shannonside region.

Athlone Area District manager Pat Keating told Shannonside FM that for now, there is no immediate threat of flooding in Athlone.
