Two new soup kitchens to be set up in Athlone and Mullingar in coming weeks

A soup kitchen charity which already serves more than 2,500 meals a week is to set up two centres in this region to meet demand.

The Irish Soup Kitchen Centre is to roll out its’ service in Athlone and Mullingar over the next six months in response to requests from councillors and based on local data.

Founder Mark O’Neill said the charity is already serving up to 2.600 meals a week at its’ existing centres in Navan, Drogheda and Balbriggan in Co, Dublin.

He says that some people who got caught up in the recession of 2007 are still recovering while pensioners often struggle at this time of year to eat and pay to heat their homes.
