Calls for South Westmeath hospice to be made more accessible for respite care

The Chairperson of the South Westmeath hospice Committee says they want to see the existing unit in Athlone being made more accessible for respite care for people who are seriously ill.

Claire Lennon was speaking after a meeting with health Minister Simon Harris yesterday during which he assured them that plans to close the unit at the end of this year would be taken off the table.

The hospice committee chairperson says that while they are cautiously optimistic about the future of the services following yesterday’s meeting with Simon Harris they will be maintaining their petition and are planning for a rally in October to highlight support for the facility.

She says another issue which they would like see progress on is the way the unit admissions policy is run, so that more people can use the beds of respite when necessary.
