Searches to resume on River Shannon in Athlone after reports of individual in water

Searches are due to resume today of the River Shannon in Athlone after reports last night that a person entered the water in the town near the Strand.

Gardai and emergency services, including the Rescue 118 helicopter, were involved in a search of the river at around 8pm.

The combined search continued for a number of hours below the weir wall but were unsuccessful where all boats returned via the lough gates which were specially opened for search teams.

The Regional Search and Recovery unit has been activated and will commence searching this morning.
