RNLI issues warning to water enthusiasts after weekend rescue on Lough Ree

Five people were assisted by Lough Ree RNLI after their boat ran aground in blustery conditions on the Hexagon Shoal yesterday.

The crew of the Eric Rowse were alerted to the incident just after 9.30am by Malin Head Coast Guard and went to the aid of those on board the motorboat which was stranded just north of Hare Island.

There were no reported injuries and the vessel was towed off the shoal and escorted to Coosan Point to be checked out.

Tony McCarth, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Lough Ree said that crews need to have someone skippering who is using navigation charts at all times to keep them safe on the lough.
