River Shannon water level up almost 12 inches in Athlone since last week

Water levels in the Shannon have risen by almost a foot in places in the last week according to the Minister for the OPW

Fears are growing in Athlone and surrounding towns in the Shannonside region of a major flooding incident after large amounts of rainfall in the past week.

According to Independent Td Kevin Boxer Moran, Lough Ree is up 6 inches between last Friday and yesterday, while Athlone (The Strand) is up 8 inches and Athlone (Downstream, the Park, Clonown) is up 11 inches


The Minister has claimed that 2.5 inches of rain have fallen in the last number of days, but that the government and communities are on standby in case of further rises.

Earlier this week, flood defences were put in place in two areas of Ballinasloe.
