Residents on Lough Ree shore demand answers on water extraction

Residents of the Athlone area are seeking clarification on the environmental effects of extracting water from the inner lakes of Lough Ree.

Up to 300 people attended a demonstration at the Portnaneena amenity on Saturday to show their concern over plans by Irish Water to build a water treatment plant on the site.

They are also questioning the current validity of a provisional order granted to Westmeath County Council by An Bord Pleanala to allow the extraction of water from the inner lakes of Coosan Lough, Ballykeeran Bay and Killenure Lough – which are all fresh water sourced.

Campaigners are concerned over the outflow of chemically treated water into the inner lakes and Lough Ree.

These people told Shannonside FM news why they are opposed to the plans.
