Proposal to make Lough Ree a UNESCO heritage site underway

Efforts are being made to create a proposal that would make Lough Ree a designated UNESCO heritage site.

The news comes as Irish Water officially shelves its plans to construct a water extraction and treatment facility at Killinure Lough in Portaneena.

The plans were scrapped after local residents, anglers, politicians and environmentalists campaigned heavily against the proposed facility, which the company scrapped following a review.

Now the campaign is turning their attention to ensuring the entire lake is protected in the future.
